Unfortunately, many deaths cause by injuries sustained during a seizure are just reported as accidents, not as an Epilepsy related death messing up the stats and even the Epilepsy Foundation puts out contradictory information. On their page they say that SUDEP Sudden Unexplained Death from EPilepsy is the leading cause of epilepsy related deaths then say that only 1 in 1,000 people with epilepsy die from SUDEP. The stated number of epilepsy related deaths each year in the US alone has been 50,000 for over a decade, but at a rate of 1 in 1,000 each year out of the 3,400,000 people in the US living with epilepsy it only accounts for 3,400 annual deaths. Which leaves 46,000 deaths from other causes including deaths during a seizure or Status Epilepticus, and from injuries sustained during a seizure. Since SUDEP is more common than death during a seizure then that leaves over 40,000 from injuries and the 50,000 number is out of date as the number of people with epilepsy has increased over the last 10 years the number of deaths has to increase too.
